A wide-field direction-selective aVLSI spiking neuron

چکیده
We describe an analog Very-Large-Scale Integrated (aVLSI) wide-field direction-selective spiking neuron that responds robustly to both natural and artificial images. The circuitry is based on a model of the wide-field direction-selective neurons in the fly visual system. The architecture of the chip closely follows the anatomical layout of the fly visual system. The circuit has a one-dimensional array of 37 elementary motion detectors (EMDs); each of which provides local motion information to the wide-field spiking neuron. Normalisation and adaptation are employed in the circuits at each processing stage. The inputs to the EMDs saturate with high contrasts so that the motion output is not confounded with the signal contrast. The outputs of the EMDs are aggregated in a nonlinear way to produce a motion output that is independent of the stimulus size. The global aggregated signal is then used to drive an integrate-and-fire neuron. All the computation is analog except for the output of the spiking neuron. We show results from the fabricated circuit.

aVLSI Array of Spiking Neurons with Dynamical Synapses
A design for a spiking neuron with dynamical synapses is presented. Both the neuron and synapse are intended for a large scale neural network connected through an AER bus. The neuron design is a standard integrate-and-fire model with the appropriate interfacing circuits. The synapse, however, models several features from biology including a conductance, between the membrane voltage and synaptic...
متن کاملA Push-pull Model of Orientation-selectivity in a Hybrid Vlsi System of Spiking Neurons
We describe the use of a programmable, rewireable, multi-chip aVLSI neu-ronal system in creating orientation-selective spiking neurons with various receptive fields using a feedforward model. The multi-chip system consists of a silicon retina, an asynchronous router board, and a transceiver multi-neuron chip. The three modules communicate using the asynchronous ar-bitered address-event represen...
متن کاملA Hardware/Software Framework for Real-Time Spiking Systems
One focus of recent research in the field of biologically plausible neural networks is the investigation of higher-level functions such as learning, development and modulatory functions in spiking neural networks. It is desirable to explore these functions in physical neural network systems operating in real-time. We present a framework which supports such research by combining hardware spiking...
متن کاملAnalog Very Large Scale Integration Implementation of Dendrite Segment with Voltage Dependent Spiking Behavior
I. INTRODUCIION The first silicon retina, designed by Mead and Mahowald in the late 1980's [I], was an analog Very Large Scale Integration (aVLSI) system. The success of early Integrated Circuit (IC) implementations of biologically accurate neural circuits led to the exploration of many other computational systems, as well as work on development of silicon models of single neurons [2]. These aV...
متن کاملHierarchical Bayesian Inference in Networks of Spiking Neurons
There is growing evidence from psychophysical and neurophysiological studies that the brain utilizes Bayesian principles for inference and decision making. An important open question is how Bayesian inference for arbitrary graphical models can be implemented in networks of spiking neurons. In this paper, we show that recurrent networks of noisy integrate-and-fire neurons can perform approximate...
